No matter how many ways you use your space or how many times each year you change out your tchotchkes, you can find living room ideas in the collection of inspiration pieces we’ve gathered and shared below. From ultra-formal to ultra-comfortable, your living room can become the blank slate upon which you introduce your home’s design.
All Over. If budget isn’t a factor, then all-over tile can be an interesting way to merge durability and easy cleaning with style. Vary the color, shape, pattern, size and texture of tiles by using different materials on the floors, on the walls and in the shower. Using all-over tile is a good way to make a small space brighter, as the tile will reflect light.
If you’re uninspired by neutrals, natural materials can work in much the same fashion. Use wooden furniture to break up your bedroom or a set of ultra-modern metal chairs to making your dining space really stand out.
Hidden Storage. A small apartment can easily look cluttered. Storage is often limited, and items without a home end up in piles on the floor and every other surface. Visible storage solutions like boxes, jars and baskets often add to the clutter problem. The solution is hidden storage. Hiding life’s necessities behind doors or other clever cover-ups gives your apartment a clean, minimalist feel. It also lets your favorite design elements — a sofa, a piece of art, a great view — be the star of the show.
Exterior house colors should use architectural details for impact. While you may only think of the field color or the majority of the exterior walls as the color of choice, remember the smaller details of the home can be the crowing glory when it comes to color selection. Window and door trim, roof and eave colors, gutter and downspouts can be painted or gorgeous copper gutters have a beautiful patina as well. Decide if you want a high-contrast to your home’s trim and accent colors or if you prefer a more unified color approach. Either way, don’t overlook the simplicity yet effectiveness in choosing exterior trim detail colors.
Create the illusion of space with bright colors: If you want your home to look larger than it really is – especially when it is about to go on the market – you can use bright and vibrant colors like yellows and eggshells to add space to your home exterior. As a warning, avoid the common color white. Although it can add space, it is nowhere near as effective as tinted colors.
It’s also best to think of the unifying color palette as the base of the room rather than the whole picture. Think of it as a pie; the color you choose to follow isn’t the entire pie – just the filling. But no pie is complete without the crust. In this case, the “crust” is the neutrals and complimentary accents. Focus on complimenting your main color with a variety of neutrals; Pops of white and black give the eye a place to rest from the intensity of the main shade.
Wood decors are warm and inviting, which is probably why some of the bedrooms may inspire a cottage-like atmosphere. We also went for some themed rooms, most of them featuring black and white arrangements. Other common characteristics of these modern bedrooms include king-sized beds, various paintings, intriguing night tables, flower arrangements and colorful wallpapers.
Living Room and Wall Texture. Textured walls are also a great way to change the feel of your living room. You can use either visual or physical texture to fulfill this idea. With visual texturing, your wall may feature a feather design with contrasting paint to the main wall color. This type of design is still flat against the wall and often called faux painting. For physical texturing, your ultimate design may encompass the look of a plaster wall, a swirl effect, a Mediterranean or Spanish knife texture, or nearly any other texture your mind can imagine. Once you pick your room’s overall design, texturizing your walls is a great way to show it off.
