Create the illusion of space with bright colors: If you want your home to look larger than it really is – especially when it is about to go on the market – you can use bright and vibrant colors like yellows and eggshells to add space to your home exterior. As a warning, avoid the common color white. Although it can add space, it is nowhere near as effective as tinted colors.
Create an Alcove or Wall Niche. In newer construction, drywall is normally hollow and supported by vertical 2x 4 wood beams (studs) that are 16” apart. If your bed is set up on a non-exterior wall, use a stud finder to mark where your bed’s wood wall beams are and cut out an alcove. Your new alcove may not be incredibly deep, but it may be all you need for small necessities like an alarm clock or some personal items.
Go Big. Not only do large mirrors look impressive, they also help you bring in light. Depending on your space and style, you can try adding a frame around the mirror to give it a more polished appearance. Leaving it unframed works for more minimalistic spaces.
Mix and Match. Gather different sizes and/or styles of mirrors and hang them in a gallery-wall-style arrangement. Be sure to vary the mirrors so that they complement instead of compete against one another. Keep them all on one wall, or you’ll risk a funhouse effect.
Living Room and Wall Texture. Textured walls are also a great way to change the feel of your living room. You can use either visual or physical texture to fulfill this idea. With visual texturing, your wall may feature a feather design with contrasting paint to the main wall color. This type of design is still flat against the wall and often called faux painting. For physical texturing, your ultimate design may encompass the look of a plaster wall, a swirl effect, a Mediterranean or Spanish knife texture, or nearly any other texture your mind can imagine. Once you pick your room’s overall design, texturizing your walls is a great way to show it off.
Blend brown for a natural look in your den: If you love the look of wood or leather or already incorporate this earthy natural look in any room of your house, adding some brown paint can amplify the appearance. You should be warned, though, that brown can cause depression in some people.
Skip the Bulky Bed Frame. A few inches of extra space can be vital in a small bedroom. Part ways with your footboard-style bed frame and replace it with a simple modern headboard to finish the look of your bed. Or, opt for a hollywood-style frame that supports the bottom of the bed and extends no further than the perimeter of the mattress. You can decorate the space above the bed with art, or add a headboard later.
Lighting Effect A simple DIY project that makes a big impact in a painted bedroom is a wall dimmer switch. Dimmers are inexpensive and help create the right lighting according to your mood. The ability to brighten or dim a light on command is especially helpful if you’ve selected to paint your bedroom walls in a bold color.
Wall Molding. If you’re feeling adventurous, add some depth to a wall by attaching wall molding in rectangular or square shapes before painting. The wall molding adds a unique dimensional effect to your bedroom. For contrast, choose a different paint color for the molding.
